Balcon al mar beach Arenal beach Javea Port of Javea

Jávea, "pronounced as: (gáwea)" and Valencian Xàbia, is a beautiful coastal town on the Costa Blanca in Spain and an ideal holiday destination in the Comunidad Valenciana, in the north of the province of Alicante. It is the most eastern village in the area of La Marina Alta. Attractive for families or couples, with family or friends, Jávea offers many possibilities for tourists of all ages. A day out, doing sports or just relaxing on the beach or by the pool of your holiday home, flat or holiday villa with private pool. Enjoy the Mediterranean culture in this convenient location on the coast, surrounded by beaches, people, culture, festivals and gastronomy.

Jávea, an area of 68.4 km2, is surrounded by beaches and mountains. To the north are the foothills of the Montgo mountain "Las Planas" and the cape "Cap de Sant Antoni" with an altitude of 167 metres above sea level. In the northeast lies the Montgo itself, with an altitude of 753 metres. At the foot of the Montgo are some of the beautiful neighbourhoods where many luxury villas with pool can be found. To the east is the wide valley of the Río Gorgos, which crosses the area from east to west. In the south are the hills of La Granadella, which extend to a platform of 200 metres height and the cape "Cap de la Nao" where the villa districts Balcon al Mar and Costa Nova are situated.

Centro historico

The old town is the part of Jávea that still retains its typical Spanish character today with its narrow streets, whitewashed houses, arched doorways, gothic windows, wrought-iron lattice "rejas" and stone balconies.

Port

The port of Jávea, which originated in the fifteenth century and grew in the following centuries, peaked in the nineteenth century with the export of sultanas. Now a fishing port, the arrival of fishing boats and the traditional fish auction have become a tourist attraction. The residential areas around the port have a strong sailor character with old fishermen's houses and narrow streets.

El Arenal beach

El Arenal beach, located in the middle of the bay of Jávea, is the main tourist attraction and without doubt the most famous beach due to its fine sand and shallow waters. The wide palm promenade offers many nice shops, restaurants and bars, both day and night you can go here for a snack and a drink.

Climate of Jávea / Xàbia - Costa Blanca

The climate in Jávea, as in the rest of the Costa Blanca, is moderate to mild throughout the year. The mountain El Montgo protects Jávea from the cold wind from the north in winter and the wind from the east from the sea makes the heat in summer more pleasant. The average annual temperature varies between 17 and 22 degrees, with an average temperature of 12 degrees in January to an average of 26 degrees in the months of July and August. Jávea is very green, even though it does not rain very often, Jávea has a lot of water under the ground. For this reason, it is thought that one of the possible explanations for the name comes from the Arabic word "Xabiga", which means a kind of well or water reservoir, in connection with the large quantities that existed in this place.

The history of Jávea / Xàbia

The history of Jávea is rich, probably because of its coastal location, climate and valley, there have been many settlers and invaders who have settled here over the centuries. The oldest evidence of human activity in the course of Jávea can be found in the Montgó cave, where some materials date back to the Upper Palaeolithic, about 16,000 years before our time.

In the history of Jávea there are 7 important stages: the Iberian period, the Roman period, the Visigothic period, the Islamic period, the Medieval period, the Modern period and the Contemporary. But the most important and relevant phases in the history of Jávea/Xàbia are perhaps the Roman and Moorish periods.

Landscape of Jávea / Xàbia

Jávea lies between two capes, Cabo de San Antonio and Cabo de la Nao, and is protected by the mountain of El Montgó. The coastline of Jávea stretches for 25 km and offers a varied landscape.

The coastline itself consists mainly of rugged rocky coastline and coves with pebble beaches with the exception of the Arenal, Jávea's sandy beach. These cliffs and coves with several caves are also beautiful to admire from the sea. The mountainous areas are covered with extensive pine forests and the flat area is very fertile, where grapes, almonds, olives and oranges are grown.

The landscape of Jávea (and Denia) is characterised by the Montgó mountain, which can be seen in the vast area and many people say that from Jávea it looks like an elephant with its head and trunk stretching to the sea. The Montgó is 753 metres high and consists of rock formations, cliffs and caves and is home to some of Spain's most unique flora and fauna. In 1987, the Montgó area was declared a natural park. It is possible to climb the mountain from various places and guided excursions are also offered.

Surrounding Jávea are the Spanish villages of Moraira, Jesus Pobre, Benitachell, Gata de Gorgos and Pedreguer, which have retained their typical Spanish character. If you would like to visit larger cities during your holiday, you can take a trip to Benidorm, Alicante or Valencia.

Jávea's 25 km of coastline offers a variety of beaches and coves renowned for their natural beauty, clear waters and Mediterranean woodland. We can distinguish beaches of gravel, stones and rocks or sand, where you can practice all kinds of water sports: jet skiing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking, water skiing, pedal boats, sailing, fishing, etc.

Beach Javea Beach Port of Javea Terrace by the water

Besides the Arenal, there are several pebble and rocky beaches such as El Pope - Tangó, La Grava, La Muntanyar and La Caleta. The clear water and beautiful views make these beaches unique, and snorkelling also offers wonderful underwater views.

La caleta La Muntanyar La Grava

La Granadella is one of the most beautiful bays in Jávea, with cliffs on both sides, this bay consisting of pebbles, beautiful views, crystal clear water, snorkelling and canoeing along the impressive cliffs and caves. Granadella beach was voted the best beach in Spain in the summer of 2012. La Barraca - Portixol is a quiet cove and especially loved by fishermen and locals, the cove overlooks the island of Portitxol. When talking about the beaches of Jávea, we cannot forget to mention the chiringuitos. These typical beach bars can be found from about June to September between the port of Jávea and the Arenal. A drink at the water's edge in one of these beach bars with a breeze from the sea really gives you the holiday feeling. Most also offer small snacks and in the evening you can go here for a drink or a cocktail.

Sports in Jávea / Xàbia

Jávea offers tennis courts, riding clubs, sailing clubs, gyms, diving schools, cycling clubs, basketball and football clubs, shooting clubs and a golf course.

For the sporty holidaymaker, Jávea offers plenty of opportunities to play tennis, golf, mountain biking, hiking, boating, cycling, are just a few of them. In addition to the water sports activities mentioned earlier, such as jet skiing, windsurfing, canoeing and kayaking, water skiing, pedal boats, sailing, fishing, snorkelling and diving, and beach activities such as beach volleyball, walking, cycling, mountain biking and rock climbing are also well known in this region.

Sports in Jávea / Xàbia

There are different routes in the Montgó area, Reserva Marina, Ruta de Las Ermitas, Granadella, to the lighthouse or lookout points, through the beautiful nature and the valley.

Golf in Jávea / Xàbia

There are several 9 and 18-hole golf courses in the Comunidad Valencia and on the Costa Blanca, the climate in this region makes it ideal to play all year round.

The Jávea Golf Club is located on the road from Jávea to Benitachell. This 9-hole golf course was designed by Francisco Moreno and opened in 1981. Sheltered by the Cap San Antonio, this course enjoys a perfect microclimate all year round and is set in beautiful natural surroundings, surrounded by pine trees.

Golf in Jávea / Xàbia

Nearby is the 27-hole La Sella golf course, designed by José María Olazábal in 1991 and internationally renowned for its excellent playing conditions all year round. Three 9-hole courses can be distinguished by 3 different colours and names of local winds due to their geographical location;

  • Llebeig, south-facing, in Valencian this is the name for the warm wind from the Sahara.
  • Gregal, eastward and owes its name to the ancient sailors who used the wind for their journeys to Greece.
  • Coming from the north, this cold wind is feared by farmers.

On all three courses, you can enjoy playing golf in pure nature.

Shopping in Jávea / Xàbia

Cozy souvenir shops on the promenade, boutiques in the harbour and shops in the village offer you a day of shopping in Javea while strolling along the beach or through the narrow streets. Of course, there is also a weekly market in Javea, which is held every Thursday in the village and here you will not only find fruit and vegetables but also textiles, shoes, bags, home, garden and kitchen items etc. and even souvenirs can be found here. Close to Jávea, in nearby Ondara, is the Portal de la Marina shopping centre with many shops, restaurants and a cinema. For those who really want a day out, the nearest cities Valencia and Alicante are a must, for a city trip or just for a day of shopping while you can enjoy these cities and the beautiful buildings, especially the centre of Valencia is beautiful.

Sights of Jávea / Xàbia

Iglesia de San Bartalomé

The most remarkable building in the historical centre is undoubtedly the church of San Bartalomé, built from the 14th to the 16th century, with extensions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The most important work belongs to the Isabelline Gothic style. Due to its importance and significance, it was declared a National Artistic Monument in 1931.

Church in Javea Covered market in Javea Casa del Cable javea

Mercado Municipal de Abastos

Opposite the church is the current municipal covered market hall where you can find a wide range of goods such as fruit, vegetables, fresh fish and meat. Previously, there was a convent "Convento de las Agustinas Descalzas" on this spot, which was destroyed during the Civil War (1936-39) to build a covered market hall, but it took until 1946 before this was actually realised.

Casa del Cable - The Cable House

Another interesting building in the harbour is the Casa del Cable (the house of the cable) from 1860, of which only the pillars of the "arches" have survived. Here was the telegraph station that connected the peninsula with Ibiza via an undersea cable. After renovation, the rooms are now used for exhibitions.

Ermitas de conquista - Chapels of the conquest

The surrounding chapels were built in the 14th and 15th centuries and are referred to by the name of the era in which they were built, namely the Christian occupation. We distinguish the following in the area of Jávea:

  • San Antonio, now gone, stood on the promontory that gave it its name (Cabo San Antonio). Only the remains of a paving stone remain.
  • Pòpul (XIV-XV) is on the way. Jesús Pobre with paintings by Soler Blasco.
  • San Juan (XV-XVI), became the old chapel of the cemetery in 1817.
  • Santa Lucía y Sta. Bárbara (XIV-XV) is the most beautiful and representative chapel. On the name day of St. Llúcia, 13 December, the village climbs the hill to the shrine in pilgrimage.

The 18th century was an era characterised by demographic and economic growth, when wealthy families or small landowners built these shrines. They are simple and small in size.

Of the six chapels, two have already disappeared and the rest are privately owned, with the exception of Ermita del Santo Cristo del Calvario on the way to Denia. The original chapel was built in 1770, but in the middle of the 19th century it was converted into the current one, with a large facade, various geometric figures, the shape of a Greek cross and a dome covered with blue glazed tiles.

The eleven windmills at La Plana

The eleven mills on La Plana date from the 14th century and the rest from the 18th century. The Safranera mill dates back to the 19th century (1850). The mills on La Plana are cylindrical in shape, 7 metres high and about 6 metres wide; their function was to grind wheat.

Windmills on La Plana

The mills are now outdated and without sails, but the remains of these mills can be seen from many places in Jávea, such as on the higher La Plana.

Fiestas and celebrations in Jávea / Xàbia

Impressive parades, bull runs and traditional costumes characterise Jávea's fiestas, which are rounded off more than once by magnificent fireworks. The most important holidays on the Jávea calendar are:

Moors and Christians javea Bulls in the water Javea San Juan Javea

  • 17 January - San Antón blessing of pets in the parish of del Mar.
  • Carnival, although not very characteristic of this area, is also celebrated with parades and, of course, costumes.
  • Easter, on the other hand, is an important event and is celebrated with family.
  • San Vicente Ferrer is the patron saint of the Comunidad Valenciana and the celebration takes place on the Monday after Easter Monday.
  • Festivities of Jesus of Nazareth, whose main activity is the descent from the statue of Jesus of Nazareth to the church of San Bartalomé and back to the chapel of the Calvario. Nowadays, the crosses of 2 May are also celebrated with crosses of flowers.
  • 24 June - San Juan which begins with celebrations and festivities in the 15 days before, most of which take place in the last 5 days before the night of San Juan. Bulls, fireworks, the "focs de San Joan" (fires of San Juan) characterise this celebration and, of course, the monument made of papier-mâché.
  • Third week of July - Moros y Cristianos, these fiestas too, which depict the struggle between the Moors and the Christians, are celebrated in Jávea, as in the whole of the Comunidad Valenciana, with beautiful robes, parades, fireworks and the whole event is accompanied by salutes and cannon shots.
  • At the end of July - Ajedrez Viviente, the living chess game has been celebrated since 1996 and has been declared a festival of national tourist interest. It consists of a theatrical adaptation, which focuses on a theme each year, performed by children representing a living chessboard.
  • Last week of August - early September are the Fiestas de la Virgen del Loreto, the festivities in honour of Our Lady of Loreto. With local traditional festivities such as "Bous a al Mar" (bulls in the sea).
  • 13 December, Santa Lucía, climbing the chapel of Santa Lucía and drinking hot chocolate.
  • Other festivities: The patron saint of Santa Cecilia (22 November), the patron saint of musicians, the patron saint of Nuestra Señora del Carmen, the patron saint of sailors (16 July), the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (2 August).
